There really are no words to describe how if feels to catch the first glimpse of this magnificent castle floating on the Herefordshire hills. It was built as a dream come to life for hosting house parties and it remains so today. Usually only open to the public on certain days during the summer you can now enjoy the absolute ultimate of having the castle for your own exclusive use party.
Drive through classical parkland to reach the fairytale entrance, drift up the stone stairs into the Great Hall and you will feel like royalty. In rooms of dramatic yet perfect scale, history and beauty surround you.
You could spend hours just admiring the gold columned Pugin Room, designed by the man famous for the interiors of the Houses of Parliament, and days studying the art treasures and amour collections. You can walk through acres of gardens – a tourist attraction in their own right or picnic by the lake. Fans of William Morris will be able to immerse themselves in rare interiors that reflect this era’s love of decoration by skilled artisans – a statement against the readymade culture that surrounds us even more today than when the castle was built. Yet all has been lovely updated – it is not a museum, it is a gracious and welcoming home.
As a home, the grounds and amazing architecture simply highlight the warmth of the spaces and decoration. The welcome that reflects in the polished dining table, the opulent sofas and the friendliness of the staff speak of laughter and comfort as much as they do of grand events. We can believe that the Billiard Room with its open fire and comfortable sofas complete with soft blankets for wrapping yourself into has seen many late nights and those quite moments with a book in the light filled Octagon Room will never be forgotten.
With many bedrooms large enough to be suites, you can imagine spending leisurely time getting ready for a grand dinner or simply a very long breakfast in bed. Sit by the large windows and gaze across the lake to the unspoiled hills beyond and you instantly feel at home.
This dazzling castle distills the very essence of a grand country party; you will be impressed, comforted and very well looked after. The Castle has a full staff including a chef and a very large wine cellar. All you really need to do is choose how you would like to spend your days.
We simply do not have room to list all the activities that the castle has to offer. Highlights included a Landrover specialist adventure centre on site, estate shoots, estate fishing and a daredevil highwire - glide from the tallest tower to the other side of the lake in a few exhilarating seconds. Quieter days may include spa treatments, painting or wine tasting. Ask us for more details and see how far you can stretch your imagination.
With so much on offer, it is easy to see why the castle has already hosted some major corporate events. The sheer majesty is enough to impress whilst the atmosphere remains comfortable. The knowledgeable staff are consummate professionals who can advise and help at every step.
We also recommend this castle as one of our venues particularly suitable for weddings; however, given the chance we would simply take it for a week and live the dream.
